 Maritime Buoyage System: A&B

There are two buoyage systems for navigation buoys rules in IALA guideline. In 1976, the Region A system was proposed by IALA, and agreed by IMCO(International Governmental Marine Consultative Organisation). This system has gradually spread throughtout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, the Gulf and some Asian countries;

The Region B system was proposed in 1980, applied in North, Central and South America, Japan, Korea and the Phillippines.

2. Types of Marks

The mariners must well know the meaning of different marks when they are navigating on the sea to secure the maritime safety. There are 5 types of marks, easily to be distinguised by their shape, colour, top mark.


I. Lateral Marks: Port Hand Mark and Starboard Mark Buoy, defines a channel and indicate the port and starboard sides of the navigation route to be followed into a waterway such as a harbour, river or estuary from seaward. The vessel should keep port marks to its left and keep starboard marks to its right.

II. Cardinal Marks

Cardinal marks indicate the direction of safety as a compass direction relative to the mark, and it is named after the quadrant in which it is placed. It has distinctive black and yellow markings and topmarks.

Cardinal marks can be used to show the following:

a. the deepest water on an area on the named side of the mark

b. the safe side on which to pass a danger

c. draw attention to a feature in a channel such as a bend, junction or end of a shoal.

III. Isolated Danger Mark

It is used to indicate a hazard to shipping such as submerged rock or wreck which has navigable water all around it. It is erected or moored above the hazard.

The double sphere topmark is an important feature and needs to be visible by day, and it should be as large as possible.

VI. Safe Water Mark

It indicate there is navigable water all around the mark including the end of a channel or mid channel. They are the only mark to have vertical stripes.

V. Special Marks

It is usually used to indicate a feature such as recreation zones, speed limits, mooring areas or cable and pipe lines including outfall sewerage pipes.

UHMWPE navigation buoys  are available in diameter from 0.8 meter to 3.5 meters,

the hull thickness is from 10mm to 30mm, available colors are red and green for lateral and starboard marker,yellow for special marker, blue/yellow for ship wreck marker, red/white for safe water marker, red/black for isolated danger marker, cardinal markers, Ice buoy markers,etc. All the colors are in line with IALA Recommendation E-108, the Surface Colours used as Visual Signals in Aids to Navigation. UHMWPE Navigation Buoy Benefits

1. Environment Friendly

The float is self colored, made by environment friendly pigments imported from Switzerland, which is no pollution to the environment.

 

2. Maintenance Free

1). The plastic buoy do not need paint in 10 years;

2). The UHMWPE float and tail pipe is self lubricant, will not adhere sea growth, which can save much costs for cleaning;

3). The ballast weights are inside the tail pipe, and they have been anti-corrosion treated.

 

3.Collision Resistant

1.) With great resilience, stretch resistance, the UHMWPE material is hard to tear (break elongation is 453.7%), the UHMWPE float could absorb the collision force maximally, which will be effectively helping the buoys to be spring back without deformation.

2.) With light weight and small inertia, the buoy could shift quickly after collision to avoid the damages;

3.) There is special steel structure supported inside the buoy, and high density polyurethane foam filled to give strong support to the floats, which well keep the high strength and good sealing of the buoy.

 

4. Longer Service Life

1.)With higher chemical stability, corrosive resistance and good UV stability, the UHMWPE navigation buoy will keep mechanical properties without aging for decades;

2.)The super structure is anti corrosion treated, and it service life could be more than 20 years;

3.) The mooring eyes and lifting eyes are specially designed, and their breaking load could reach 60 tons.
